Track and Right-of-Way

In 2019, the Federal Railroad Administration awarded Sierra Northern Railway with a $17 million Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) grant to rehabilitate the 55 mainline miles of the Oakdale Division. In 2023, the FRA announced at the American Shortline Railroad Association annual conference that Sierra Northern Railway’s CRISI Grant was in support of the best managed and best proof of work completed in the country. Whether you need a complete track build, inspections or repairs, our experienced staff can help keep your trains running smoothly.

If you need a complete track build, we’ll help you every step of the way in one complete package, or you can pick and choose what you need. Our team can start at the design process to figure out switches, length of track, degree of curve, and grades to fit your space. We will tackle grading, laying track, and surfacing. If you need crossings, we can identify a variety of options that best fit your usage plans. We can either build new track that connects to any of our existing lines or go to you and help connect to another railroad.

If you have track in need of inspections, our certified Track Inspectors can travel to you and make sure your track meets federal standards. At the end of the inspection, you will receive a detailed list of identified defects and the best course of action on how to repair them. Don’t have the ability to handle repairs yourself? We can take handle that too. Our Maintenance of Way teams can mobilize and quickly assemble to your location to repair all defects. Our crews take pride in their work, and you can be sure that along with defect corrections they’ll take care of minor issues that can later become defects if not properly addressed.

Our staff can help build a package to fit your operation’s needs. Whether you currently have locomotives on site that need to be staffed by well-trained engineers and conductors or if you need us to bring in our locomotives and crew to operate them, we can help efficiently and safely switch cars in your facility. We have years of experience in being the rail switching contractor for the United States Army at Military Ocean Terminal Concord and at Proctor and Gamble’s Sacramento facility.

Each of our rail lines has the capabilities for either long or short term car storage. Our Oakdale and West Sacramento can interchange with both Union Pacific and BNSF railroads and can take hazardous and non-hazardous cars. Ventura can interchange with Union Pacific and can currently only store non-hazardous cars.

Oakdale: 450 Cars
West Sacramento: 300 Cars
